Painting Methods To me, it is very important to start a portrait or any other painting with a well-drawn base. The portrait composition must be carefully planned, choosing the pose, size and format. I begin with outer shape of the head, I then trace lines on the subject’s face, indicating the eye-lines, the nose, mouth and the hair framing the face. In my portraits, the eyes become the focal point of my subject. I find the eyes to be the most important element that will determine the likeness of the person. I consider “the eyes to be the windows of the soul.” I believe that careful observation is necessary to obtain an excellent and expressive portrait. Once I have achieved a detailed drawing, I begin to paint. By incorporating a wide variety of shades and tones—dark colors first—then finding and blending the exact skin tones, using warm and cool colors, I attain a beautiful and harmonious work of art.
